1958 San Francisco Giants
The Giants and Dodgers brought their rivalry to California from New York in 1958. The Giants replaced the Pacific Coast League team the San Francisco Seals and the Dodgers replaced another PCL team the Los Angeles Angels.
The SF on the cap pictured is in the style of the Seals. The Giants have always used a different version of the interlocking SF on their uniform caps.
ReplyDeleteI think this was a prototype model.
ReplyDeleteI believe this cap was used during Spring Training 1958. It's certainly the cap used for the Topps '58 Baseball Card Set. Anonymous 12/14/2011 is correct for the regular season caps...
ReplyDeleteThis logo appears on the Topps 1958 Baseball cards for the San Francisco Giants. It was used during Spring Training. It was changed during the regular season .
ReplyDeleteI've always thought that the Seals' SF logo was much nicer aesthetically than the ones that the Giants have used. I also think that the Giants should use the 1957 Seals SF (but in their own orange on black) on their caps at least sometimes. It would also connect them with the baseball history that preceded their move from New York in 1958. BTW, the one shown in the photo above is a thinner version than that used by the Seals.
ReplyDeleteI have a Willie Mays 1958 baseball card, and indeed the Seals logo is on it, but the University of San Francisco interlocking SF was used instead.
